Lorsque je suis partie à New York, au détour d’un rayon de la très belle librairie Rizzoli, je suis tombée amoureuse du travail d’une photographe de rue, Vivian Maier.
Pourtant, ses clichés pris à New York, Chicago, et dans beaucoup d’autres villes, y compris à l’étranger, étaient inconnus jusqu’aux années 2000. Vivian Maier n’était pas du tout photographe, mais nounou de métier. Très discrète, elle a photographié sans relâche au fil des années, l’âge d’or d’après guerre, sans avoir forcément l’argent pour faire développer ses photos argentiques. L’histoire a voulu que l’historien John Maloof achète une boite de négatifs dans une vente aux enchères de Chicago. Dans cette boite, des trésors de Vivian Maier. Il a ensuite collecté minutieusement d’autres travaux de cette étonnante photographe, pour en faire un livre, Vivian Maier, Street Photographer, sorti en 2011, celui que j’ai acheté.

When I went to New York, inside the beautiful Rizzoli bookstore, I saw a book and I instantly fell in love with the work of a street photographer, Vivian Maier.
Yet, her photographs taken in New York, Chicago and many other cities, including abroad, were unknown until the 2000’s. Vivian Maier was not a photographer, but a nanny! Very discreet, she photographed tirelessly over the years, the golden postwar age, without necessarily having the money to develop her argentic photos. The story wants that the historian, John Maloof, purchased a box of negatives at a Chicago’s auction. In this box, the treasures of Vivian Maier. Than, he carefully collected other works of this amazing photographer, to make a book, Vivian Maier, Street Photographer, released in 2011, that I bought.
