Blog

J’adore me servir de mes Polaroïd SX 70.

Mélanie Elbaz is a young French photographer. I was immediately arrested when I saw her pictures: her portraits are disarmingly natural although the models are often big names in music and fashion (especially the cream of international DJs and artists such as Air, Keziah Jones, Moby, the XX, Larry Clark, Justice, La Roux, Grimes, Josephine de la Baume or Michel Gondry, Asia Argento … )
I loved the closeness on her pictures. These are not stolen shots but the nonchalance of characters, coupled with a contextual decor produces this impression of natural. Even in commissioned work done in studio, such as the pictures of children below, they keep their mischievous side and do not seem to particularly strike the pose. This is the art of knowing the lead … You’ve got it, I have a great admiration for Mélanie Elbaz, from whom I love the natural style!
I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions, which she kindly answered. Here they are:
For how long have you been taking pictures? What is your career ? What is your favorite material for shoots ?
I started photography at 14 years old, I trained at the National School of Photography in Arles. I attended the greatest photographers : Sarah Moon, Ferdinando Scianna, Max Vadukul, Eichiro Sakata. Then I went to Paris, I made the Icart Photo school and internships in studios such as Studio Astre, at Catherine Miran in a press office and then in London.
I shoot primarily with film with my Leica M6, my Contax 645 & I started in Canon.
I love using my Polaroid SX 70.
How would you describe your style in photo?
Natural images, Lifestyle. I love directing artists for natural portraits. I don’t do photo editing.
