Loretta Lux was a painter before becoming a photographer. This surely explains part of her ultra-realistic style where sad or absent children pose in a minimalist scenery.
The Loretta Lux portraits can disturb by the melancholic emotion they give between absurdity of existence and passivity facing elements. Why this obsession with children? The artist gives a reading key indicating that children are a metaphor for a lost paradise. But even with this explanation, the mystery of these sad little souls remains and make us think. Sheltered in their smooth bubble of pastel colors, they seem lost in a reverie, a meditation that brings us back to ourselves and to our perception of the world.
I loved Loretta Lux’s work because it reminds me of the innocence of Norman Rockwell in a more sad and more sanitized way, with the photomanipulation that erases all asperities. These pics are beautiful, strange and endearing paintings.
